Canva's free plan is more powerful than most people realise. These eight features are buried in menus that most beginners never explore — but they'll change how you design.

1. Background Remover (Free for PNG)

Most people think background removal requires Photoshop or a paid Canva plan. But for PNG images you upload, many free tools (remove.bg, Adobe Express) can do it instantly. Once you have a transparent-background PNG, import it into Canva for free.

Faster method: Go to remove.bg, upload your photo, download the transparent PNG, then upload to Canva. The whole process takes 30 seconds.

2. Bulk Create — Generate Dozens of Designs at Once

Create 50 unique designs in 2 minutes

Bulk Create connects a spreadsheet of data to your design template. Canva generates a unique design for every row.

  1. Create your design with placeholder text or images
  2. Select your text element → click the purple dots icon → Connect data
  3. Upload a CSV with your data (names, prices, product names, etc.)
  4. Click Generate X designs

Perfect for: social media posts for events, product cards with varying prices, name badges, certificates.

Apps (left sidebar) → Bulk Create

3. Brand Kit (Even on Free)

You can save your most-used colours and upload your own fonts on the free plan — it's just limited to one brand kit instead of multiple.

Brand Hub → Brand Kit → Add brand colours / Upload fonts

Once saved, your brand colours appear at the top of every colour picker. Your fonts appear in the font dropdown. This alone saves 5 minutes per design.

4. Content Planner

Canva has a built-in social media scheduler. Design your post and schedule it to publish directly to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, Pinterest, and LinkedIn — without leaving Canva.

Home → Content Planner

On the free plan you can connect 2 social accounts. Paid plans allow unlimited scheduling.

5. Magic Resize (How to Do It Free)

Magic Resize (resizing one design to multiple formats) requires Canva Pro. The free workaround: open your design, click Resize, change the dimensions, and it will resize — it just won't automatically reformat the content. You'll need to adjust elements manually, but the background and structure copy across instantly.

6. Grids and Frames for Photo Layouts

Click ElementsFrames to find hundreds of shapes that photos snap into cleanly. Drag a photo directly onto a frame and it crops automatically to fit.

The Grids section under Elements creates Instagram-style multi-image layouts instantly — drag 4 photos into a 2×2 grid and they all fit perfectly.

7. Transparent PNG Export

When downloading, choose PNG and check Transparent background. This is free and works for any design. Use it for logos, stickers, overlays, and anything you want to layer onto another image or video.

Share → Download → File type: PNG → ☑ Transparent background

8. Canva for Education — Free Pro Features

If you're a student or teacher, Canva for Education gives you all Canva Pro features for free — including Magic Resize, the full asset library, brand kits, and the background remover.

How to apply: Go to canva.com/education → apply with your school email. Approval typically takes 1–3 days.

If you don't qualify for Education, Canva also runs frequent promotions for Canva Pro trials — check your email inbox if you signed up with your real email address.
